Funding Cuts to Labrador Women's Dentention Centre This week it came to light that the plan to build a pre-trial detention centre for women and youth in Happy Valley- Goose Bay has been halted by the Provincial Government. The original cost associated with the detention centre was $2 million but recent figures being given for a centre indicate the cost of the project being closer to $15 million, to treat women and youth within their own cultural and familial surrounding. The Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women, strong advocates for the need for the facility, was shocked by the news of this turn of events and feels that the Provincial Government must now come forth with an explanation and a plan for future steps in the development of this important facility. "Learning of this news from email and radio was very upsetting to women, especially women in Labrador. The 'shelving' of the pre-trial detention centre is unacceptable, said Linda Ross, President and CEO of the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women. "The facility is desperately needed and the Government's commitment to build it grew from a recognized need to treat aboriginal women and youth in their own community and within their own culture. If there has been a significant increase in expenditure to create this facility that needs to be discussed with women in Labrador to examine what is possible. Are there other options to create a facility that meets the wishes and needs of women and youth in Labrador?" Currently women in Happy Valley-Goose Bay are sent to the women's detention centre in Clarenville, away from their families and culture. The anticipated facility was not only going to alleviate travel, but was also going to provide culturally appropriate services and programs which reflected the needs of women and youth in Labrador. "From conversations we have had with Government over the past week, it is our understanding that a group of senior officials will be travelling to Labrador to meet with women and stakeholders," commented Ross. "The Advisory Council anxiously awaits the outcome of those discussions."
